The materials and construction methods of that time—red spruce, mahogany, historic neck profiles—give the originals a character that is difficult to reproduce. Gibson Custom and the Murphy Lab do exactly that: this 1942 Banner J-45 is recreated as accurately as possible, including the aging that an original would have accumulated over decades.

The thermally aged Red Spruce top is the heart of this instrument. The thermal treatment opens up the wood's fiber structure in the same way years of playing would, resulting in a sound that feels instantly mature and layered. The mahogany back and sides deliver the warmth and directness that have given the J-45 its reputation as the ultimate songwriter's guitar. The Murphy Lab Light Aging on the nitrocellulose finish in Vintage Sunburst is hand-applied and simulates the subtle play wear of decades in precisely the right places.

The mahogany neck features a Historic profile with a rosewood fretboard, Mother-of-Pearl dot inlays, and 20 frets over a 24.75-inch scale length. The reverse rectangle rosewood bridge, aged strap-style open-back tuners with cream buttons, and bone nut complete an instrument that is historically accurate in every detail. It comes delivered in a period-correct hardshell case.
