The J-35 from the Year of its Birth: A Depression-Era Icon Recreated with Adirondack Spruce and Custom Shop Precision

The Gibson J-35 first saw the light of day in 1936, at the height of the Great Depression. Gibson developed it as a more accessible alternative to its most expensive models, but without compromising on sound or character. The result was a round-shoulder dreadnought that has inspired generations of musicians. This Custom Historic 1936 J-35 reproduces that original down to the smallest details: from the wide nut width and open-slot bridge to the thermally aged Adirondack spruce top that the masters in Bozeman, Montana selected and assembled.

The thermally aged red Adirondack spruce top is the heart of this instrument. Adirondack spruce, also known as red spruce, was the standard top material for Gibson before World War II and is known for its stiffness, light weight, and exceptional tonal projection. The thermal treatment simulates the aging an original instrument has undergone over decades. The result is a sound that feels immediately open, mature, and layered, with a dynamic range that new guitars rarely possess. The mahogany back and sides add warmth and body to the bright Adirondack character.

The mahogany neck features a Historic profile with a rosewood fretboard, MOP dot inlays, and 19 frets over a 24.75-inch scale length with a wide nut of 1.769 inches. The rectangle open-slot bridge, bone saddle and bridge pins, and cream button tuners are historically correct. Delivered in a period-correct hardshell case with Gibson Accessory Kit.
